Hosting vs Domain Names explained

As well as the design and content, Online Business Card provides your website’s hosting in the price, but not the domain name.

While we can help you get your domain name setup, here is a useful explaination of the difference and why it’s important:

Hosting

The hosting is like a house.

Website hosting is like renting a plot of land to build a house.
You need a place to store all the files and data related to your site. The hosting service stores your website's files and makes them available to visitors when they type in your domain name. Hosting is like having a home for your website on the internet, allowing it to be seen and accessed by others.

Domain Name

The Domain Name is like your house number.

A domain name is like a special address for a website. It's like the number on a house that will help your customers find the right one. Domain names, which are easier to remember and type into a search bar, act as the website's special address, guiding your customers to the right place on the internet. It usually stars with a www. , then the business name, then an ending like .com, or .co.uk.

For example, www.example.com is a domain name.

How do I get a domain name?

Option 1: You've already got one

If you've already got a domain from, you just need to provide us with access to the details.

This can be done by giving us the login to the account the domain is registered to, or just put us in touch with your old website developer to get them to send it over.

We just need a couple of bits of code to direct anyone trying to get to your website to your Online Business Card.

It can take up to 48 hours for a domain to move over and start pointing to your new Online Business Card, but once that's done you're good to go.

Option 2: You need a domain name

If you've never had a domain name before, you'll need to buy one yourself OR let us do it for you.

This can be done through domain registrars. There are loads online, including 123reg, GoDaddy, Hostinger and more.

You can buy it yourself and send us the details, or we'll add the cost of the domain to your final fee and get it for you.

Just be aware that domains are usually bought on a yearly subscription - most sellers offer discounts for multi-year purchases or discounts for first time buyers, but the renewal fees are often a bit higher than the original cost. You can discuss any questions or the best ways to go about Domain Name purchasing with your account manager.
